1996 Hunter 336

Introduction

About the 1996 Hunter 336

If you are unfamiliar with the Hunter 336, it is worth serious consideration if you are looking for a cruising sailboat under 35’ that combines comfort and ease of handling in one good-looking package. This 33-foot cruiser is a favourite among weekend adventurers, coastal cruisers, and club sailors.  This particular example is very well looked after and a beautiful and well-maintained vessel.

What sets it apart?

  • Spacious Cockpit: The Hunter 336 has a huge cockpit with unique wrap-around seating, perfect for entertaining or relaxing after a long day of sailing. The folding wheel provides easy access to the walk-through transom and large swim platform.  With a full set of new cockpit cushions and newer canvas covers, the cockpit on the 336 will become one of your favourite places anywhere.

  • Bright, Open Interior: Heading below deck, you’ll see why this boat is a favourite for extended trips. With large windows letting in plenty of natural light, an airy salon, and two private cabins, it feels like a cozy cabin on the sea. The well-designed layout can sleep six, making it ideal for families or small groups.

  • Simple Sailing: Thanks to the B&R rig, the Hunter 336 is easy to sail and forgiving, even for less experienced hands. The large mainsail gives you lots of power for our fickle winds and the smaller foresail makes sail handling simple with less stress on the gear and therefore, the crew.

The Hunter 336 is designed for those who want it all: comfortable cruising, reliable performance, and manageable size. It’s responsive under sail, steady in a breeze, and offers enough creature comforts to make you feel right at home, whether you’re out for a day or a month.

The hull and engine servicing is up to date and this clean and well-looked-after vessel is located in Nanaimo. The pictures were taken in November of 2024 and yes, it is this nice and well cared for. There is nothing to do other than pick up a new tender and away you go.

Features

Accomodation

This is where the 336 shines. Starting with the cockpit with its round seating layout provides for more sitting room than standard cockpit layouts in boats under 35’.

The folding wheel allows for easy access to the walk through transom onto the staern swim platform and aft storage areas.

There are new cockpit cushions to keep everyone comfortable and the newer canvas is in great condition and privides excellent protection from the weather.

Going below Hunter has done an amazing job of fitting in a lot features but also feeling spacious. The forward cabin has a large V-berth for kids or guests. There is a good-sized dinette with a c-shaped seating area with a full length setee across that allows 6 to sit comfortably around the adjustable table.

The aft cabin has a large and comfortable queen-sized berth with good headroom and lots of storage.

The single head is large, with a marine toilet hot and cold pressure water and a shower.

Hot/cold outdoor shower at stern

There is an Espar forced air diesel heat on board to ensure everyone is warm on cold evenings and mornings.

Overall this has some of the best living space of any boat under 35 feet.

Sails and Rigging

The 336 has Hunter’s well-known B&R rig. The swept-back spreaders provide stability for the mast without the need for a back-stay. This allows for a larger, more efficient mainsail as well as freeing up space in the cockpit.

The large, mainsail provides lots of power and is great for the fickle winds of BC. The large main also means the foresail is much smaller, reducing pressure on sheets and making line-handling easier requiring less strength than a boat with a large foresail.

B&R Rigging

The B&R rigging is a Hunter ‘thing’ that enables the use of a larger mainsail as there is no backstay to get in the way of the mainsail being ‘wider’, particularly up high.

The result is a large, efficient mainsail that remains balanced in a wide variety of wind speeds. The large mainsail means the foresail is reduced in size. The relatively small foresail results in less power forward and significantly less than you would have on a large, overlapping, genoa. The smaller foresail means the crew has a much easier time handling the sheets as there is less stress on the system creating less stress on the crew.

It also means there isn’t a backstay to work around when building a cockpit cover. You can simply make a cockpit bimini larger with full coverage and without the holes backstay required.

The rigging isn’t perfect as the mainsail is prevented from being let out perpendicular to the boat for downwind sailing. This can be offset by using a cruising spinnaker for efficient downswing sailing if you desire.

Here is an article from Boats.com for more info.

Designed by the late Lars Bergstrom and Sven Ridder, the B&R rig eliminates the need for a backstay to allow for a more efficient mainsail shape. Fixed backstays are often omitted from the designs of today’s performance-oriented boats to allow the mainsail to incorporate a full roach design — a more aerodynamic shape both for racing and cruising performance.

The B&R rig has 30-degree swept spreaders, creating 120 degrees between each rigging point. The result is a tripod arrangement, used for years to support huge radio towers, that has excellent strength for sailboat rigs.

While conventional rigs often lead their shrouds inboard to allow for the large genoa overlap, Hunter takes them far outboard to the hull. This wide chain plate base significantly reduces the compression loads to the deck and hull, while allowing for tighter sheeting angles. The smaller headsail sheets are inside the spreader base.

The latest advancement to the B&R rig is the addition of mast struts. These struts stabilize the lower section of the mast, allowing compression loads to be spread and reducing the point loading at the mast base. They create a strong point for the boom and spinnaker pole loadings. The struts also allow us to use a smaller mast section reducing weight aloft to decrease the heeling and pitching moments, making for a more comfortable ride. Additionally, they provide a secure handhold when going forward.
