Introduction

About the 1988 Commander 30

Built in BC, the Commander 30 is a boat intended for exploring the green waters of Canada’s left side. It has everything you need to get to where you want to be quickly, safely, and comfortably, whether you’re at the upper helm or the lower helm. The cockpit is the perfect place for fishing, preparing to SCUBA dive, or just hanging out. The twin Volvo Penta gas engines are easy to work on, easy to find parts for, and powerful enough to get you skipping over the waves.

In a feat of design genius, this 30-footer can sleep 3 couples: the forward cabin, the dinette breaks down into a double, and the sofa in the aft sitting area breaks down into a double as well. You don’t find that very often! Cook your catch in the full galley. Clean up in the head with a shower. Enjoy the view from the flybridge.

This vessel is currently enjoyed by two owners who live out of BC, and who are hoping to partner with a third, local person. The boat is moored in Nanaimo. They’re offering the option for you to own either 1/2 or 1/3 of the boat. If you’re local and willing to coordinate maintenance activities and ensure the boat gets used regularly, this is a fantastic way to get onto the water without assuming all the costs.

Moorage is in a boatshed at Stones Marina in Nanaimo.

Exterior

From aft, there is a large swim grid with davit system for the dinghy. Access the cockpit via a hinged door in the transom. The cockpit is large, affording excellent space for fishing, crabbing, etc. Access the twin engines through a large hatch. There are compartments in the transom and against the stbd hull. Port and stbd is access to side decks. To port, is a ladder to the flybridge w upper helm, covered by a royal blue bimini.

The flybridge sports fwd- and aft-facing seats on both port and stbd, w a captain’s chair center. A low plexiglass windscreen spans the fwd aspect, protecting the captain from updraft. The helm console has a metal wheel with throttles, and all instruments. There are canvas covers for all seats and the console as well as a large bimini top.

The side decks are wide enough to make your way to the bow by holding onto the upper rails. The bow rails begin about midships. The bow has a hatch over the fo’c’sle, a Samson post fwd of that, and then the windlass and anchor roller. A spotlight is mounted on the pulpit forwardmost. There are two large front windows; two sets of large sliding windows on each side; a large, fixed window on the cabin aft; and a window in the aft door.

Sitting Area

As you enter the cabin from the cockpit, to port is a lovely sitting area with a loveseat against the hull and magazine rack on a bulkhead that partially separates this area from the dinette.

Head

To stbd of the sitting area is the head. It is very bright with a large window. There is an electric flush toilet, soap dispenser, stainless sink, and vanity.

Settee & Galley

A 4-person settee with pleasant green upholstery is to port, and the galley is to stbd. From aft, the galley has a counter running athwartship against a bulkhead. Ample storage is found in the counter as well as shelves above it. Against the stbd hull next to the counter is the stainless sink, the stove forward of that, and then another countertop with the fridge beneath.

Lower Helm

Forward of the galley is a 2-person bench facing the lower helm. There are 4 drawers beneath this seat. Step up to the bench and you’ll find a large console with metal wheel and all instruments. There are instruments located on an upper panel as well. Opposite the helm is a 2-person bench companion seat with a small table in front of it.

Fo’c’sle

Between is a step-down into the fo’c’sle. There is a louvered door leading into this sleeping space. The bunk can be made into a large double, or the stbd cushion can be pulled away to expose drawers beneath. Overhead is a hatch for escape, light, and fresh air. Forward is a small panel to access the chain locker.
