Features

Accomodation

“Turnstone” offers a spacious and practical layout designed for comfortable extended cruising. The interior is finished in classic Grand Banks teak, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. All interior upholstery was replaced in 2023, and the flybridge upholstery in 2021.

  • Salon & Living Area: The main salon is the heart of the vessel, featuring an L-shaped settee to starboard for relaxed lounging and an oval teak table with storage. Custom Grand Banks swivel chairs provide additional seating. Port and starboard side doors provide excellent ventilation and easy deck access. A dedicated bar cabinet with an ice maker ensures you feel at home.

  • Sleeping Areas: The accommodation includes two private staterooms. The main cabin features a convenient island berth and a large private head to starboard, and a completely separate shower to port. There is plenty of storage for all. The forward cabin offers a large, versatile V-berth with a filler piece, closet storage, as well as an adjoining head with an integrated shower area. Both heads are equipped with new electric toilets for ease of use.

  • Cockpit & Flybridge: The aft cockpit provides easy access to the swim platform and the spacious flybridge. The flybridge is an exceptional outdoor living space with fore and aft seating, an L-shaped settee, a teak table, and a full suite of helm controls—perfect for entertaining and enjoying panoramic views while underway. It is covered by a large bimini, which provides great protection from the sun.

Domestic Equipment

As with most Grand Banks 42’s, Turnstone is equipped with comprehensive systems for self-sufficient long-term living aboard.

  • Cooking: The L-shaped galley is an uncommon layout and provides additional counter space and storage. It is equipped with a Force 10 three-burner propane stove and oven, a Nova Kool 12V refrigerator and separate freezer, as well as a new U-Line 110V ice maker. A Zintex propane detector ensures safety.

  • Heating & Hot Water: Comfort in cooler climates is provided by an Espar diesel furnace. A Raritan 12-gallon hot water heater (2018) supplies ample hot water to the galley, heads, and the hot/cold cockpit shower.

  • Toilets: The vessel features two heads, each with its own electric toilet and macerator pump, ensuring reliable and odour-free waste management. Please note, the entire sanitation system was replaced in 2023, including new toilets, hoses, holding tank and macerator.

Electrical

The electrical system had a complete audit in 2022 by Propel Marine Electric. All recommendations were attended to. The system is robust and modernized for reliability, featuring both AC and DC systems with ample power generation and storage.

  • Charging & Batteries: A Xantrex True Charge 40-amp battery charger (2018) efficiently charges the house bank of six 12V AGM house batteries (2021). Also is a single 8-D 12V starting battery and a separate 4-D generator starting battery. A smart regulator on the main engine provides supplemental charging with a Prestolite 65 amp alternator.

  • Generator: An Onan 8kW generator with a sound shield provides ample power for all household appliances when off the dock. The AC system is protected by GFCIs throughout.

  • Inverter & Protection: A Magnum Energy Pure Sine 2800-watt inverter allows for the silent operation of 110V appliances without the generator. The system is monitored via Cruising Equipment amp-hour meters and voltage/amp meters at the lower helm.

  • 50 amp shore power inlets fore and aft with 2 shore power cords

Navigation and Electronics

The vessel is outfitted with a comprehensive suite of modern and reliable electronics for safe and confident navigation. A new Garmin suite of electronics was installed in 2021. The existing system was kept for redundancy and runs separately.

  • Chartplotter & GPS: Touchscreen and wifi integrated Garmin 8612 and 8610 chart plotters are the primary navigation displays for accurate positioning.

  • Radar: Garin Fantom 24 dome added in 2021. A separate Furuno 1832 36-mile radar has been kept as a redundant backup.

  • Autopilot: A Garmin autopilot integrates with the navigation system for effortless passage-making. New autopilot rudder controls added in 2023.

  • Radios & AIS: Communication is handled by a Standard Horizon GX2100 VHF with a Smart Mic. For enhanced collision avoidance, a Digital Yacht AIS Class B receiver (2018) broadcasts the vessel’s position and receives data from other AIS-equipped vessels.

  • Additional Instruments: A Garmin depth sounder and a Furuno GP-31 GPS add redundancy to the system. An intercom system allows for communication between key areas on the boat.

  • Garmin Fusion Bluetooth stereo, new in 2021

  • Remote-controlled search light installed in 2021

Ground Tackle, Tender and Davits

“Turnstone” is equipped for secure and easy anchoring in a variety of conditions.

  • Anchor & Chain: The primary anchor is a heavy-duty 25kg Vulcan anchor, deployed on 250 feet of all-chain 3/8” rode for superior holding power. A Danforth stern anchor with 250’ of rode is also carried for multi-directional holding or stern-to docking.

  • Windlass: A Lofrans 12V electric windlass with controls at both helms and at the bow makes raising and lowering the anchor a simple one-person operation. Double stainless steel bow rollers facilitate easy deployment and stowage.

  • Tender: The vessel carries a 9.5-foot AB tender. AB tenders are renowned for their high-quality construction, durability, and excellent seakeeping abilities, providing a safe and stable platform for shore transfers, exploration, and recreation.

The tender is powered by a 6hp Yamaha outboard motor from 2017.

This combination provides the ultimate in convenience and safety. The electric davit allows for quick deployment and retrieval of a substantial, high-quality tender, enabling easy access to shore, exploring anchorages, and acting as a vital safety lifeline. The entire system is designed to be managed effortlessly by a cruising couple.

  • Roskelley/Olsson electric transom davit. Electric Operation: This davit is powered electrically, making the launching and retrieval of the tender a simple, one-person task without the need for manual cranking or heavy lifting.

Transom-Mounted: Mounted on the stern (transom), it keeps the tender clear of the cockpit and aft deck, preserving valuable living and movement space on the main deck.

Secure Stowage: When hoisted, the tender is held securely above the swim platform, allowing for safe travel in all conditions without affecting the vessel’s seaworthiness.

  • Stern tie line

Mechanical

The machinery spaces are well-organized and feature upgraded, reliable power plants with comprehensive support systems.

  • Main Engines: Twin Cummins 6BT5.9 rated for 250hp diesel engines (with 4500 hours), providing a perfect balance of power and efficiency. They achieve a cruising speed of 8.5 knots while burning a combined 4 gallons per hour. The 250 HP engines were an optional upgrade and provided extra power when traversing our plentiful areas of moving water.

  • Generator: The Onan 8kW generator provides independent electrical power to run the AC systems you need, as well as keeping your batteries topped up.

  • Auxiliary Equipment: Systems include a 12V oil change system for the mains and generator, Racor fuel filters on mains and generator, Wolverine 250W engine heaters, sight gauges and shaft brushes. A comprehensive assortment of spare parts is included.

  • Propulsion & Steering: Power is transmitted through Twin Disc MG506 transmissions via direct drive to the propellers. Morse engine controls ensure precise throttle and gear response. New Tides drippless shaft seals replaced in 2021.

  • Trim tab hydraulics replaced in 2021

  • Turbochargers rebuilt in 2021

  • Full service with oil changes in the summer of 2025

The Grand Banks Difference

The decision to buy a Grand Banks is often about acquiring more than just a boat; it’s about investing in a legacy and a specific type of cruising lifestyle. Here are some of the reasons Grand Banks has such a great following.

Uncompromising Build Quality and Seaworthiness:
Grand Banks are renowned for their heavy-duty, full-fiberglass hulls (a “full-displacement” or semi-displacement “sea kindly” hull, as mentioned in the listing) and impeccable teak joinery. They are built to last for decades and to handle adverse sea conditions with confidence and comfort. Owners buy them for the peace of mind that comes from being in a well-founded, robust, and deeply seaworthy vessel.

Timeless Design and Lasting Value:
A Grand Banks Classic, like this 1989 model, possesses an aesthetic that never goes out of style. While interiors are modernized, the classic lines and teak craftsmanship remain desirable. This timelessness translates into exceptional resale value and a strong, supportive community of owners.

The Ideal “Passagemaking” Trawler Layout:
The design philosophy is centered around long-range, comfortable cruising. Features like a full-width master stateroom, a walkable side decks, a protected pilothouse, and a large, functional galley are not afterthoughts—they are core to the design. This makes them perfect for couples or families looking to spend extended time aboard.

A Reputation for “Getting It Right”:
For decades, Grand Banks has been the benchmark by which other trawlers are measured. They are known for thoughtful details—ample storage, robust mechanical spaces, and practical deck layouts—that are only appreciated after miles of cruising. Buying a Grand Banks is often the result of extensive research, where buyers conclude it’s the proven, “no-regrets” choice.

A Supportive and Knowledgeable Community:
Ownership comes with entry into a passionate and helpful global community. Class owners’ associations, online forums, and a network of specialized technicians mean that help, advice, and camaraderie are always available, which is an invaluable asset for any cruiser.
