1993 Hunter Legend 40.5

Introduction

About the 1993 Hunter Legend 40.5

Whether sailing to Desolation Sound or relaxing dockside you’ll find Spriritus II a comfortable and well-equipped vessel that will keep you safe and sound.

With assumable moorage in Ladysmith, the southern Gulf Islands will be your home cruising grounds with some of the finest anchorages, marinas and wildlife anywhere.

Overall, the layout of the cockpit and deck is spacious and smart. The sugar scoop, walkthrough transom makes boarding easy from your tender or getting back aboard after a swim. As with many Hunters, the interior space is spacious and very comfortable. This vessel has 2-staterooms, and the full-width, aft cabin, is huge for a 40’ boat. The galley is well laid out, with plenty of storage and room for food prep. The dinette is large, will seat 6 for meals and socializing, and converts into a large berth when needed. Each stateroom has its own head for exceptional privacy for guests and owners alike. The overall tone of the boat is spacious, modern, brightly warm, and very welcoming. With diesel heat and a full enclosure, this boat is perfect for cruising the PNW.

Features

Accomodation

The cockpit is where you will spend most of your time on Spiritus II. It is very roomy and can be completely closed in with a canvas dodger, bimini and side curtains.  The binnacle has a fold-down table for drinks and cockpit meals.  There are cushions for all seating areas.

The owner’s cabin is located aft under the cockpit, with a full-length king-size bed, storage at each end, large lockers to port and starboard and private access to the main head on the starboard side.  The guest cabin is forward with a V berth, a separate head to port and a large storage locker to starboard.  The berth has plenty of room for two adults, with lots of storage under it.

The lounge has a dining table to port that seats six people and can be lowered to make a double bed.  A long bunk on the starboard side completes the comfortable sleeping arrangements for up to seven people.

All areas of the boat, including the cockpit can be heated using either engine heat or a separate Force 10 diesel furnace.  A closed water loop runs from the furnace located in a cockpit locker to four fan driven cabin heaters, two in the master cabin, one in the lounge and one in the forward cabin.  This loop also runs through the hot water heater.  When the engine is running, that heat generated flows through a heat exchanger located under the master bunk and into the closed loop, thus eliminating the need for the furnace.  Two area thermostats keep the boat interior comfortable and cozy at any time of year.

Both heads have manual toilets, sinks and showers with sump pumps to take out grey water.  Both have mirrors and storage cabinets under and above the counters.  The forward toilet pumps directly overboard, and the aft toilet pumps into a 100-litre plastic holding tank that can be emptied by suction pump out through a deck fitting or discharged through an electric macerator pump. The aft head has a shower curtain to create a separate shower stall.

Propulsion

Spiritus II is powered by a Yanmar 4 cylinder 50 HP diesel engine.  There is one 120 litre fuel tank located aft of the master cabin.  The fuel line has a centrifugal filter to remove water, followed by a 50-micron Racor fuel filter, and then a 10-micron Racor filter before getting to the engine’s final fuel filter.  This system has so far eliminated any problems arising from dirty or contaminated fuel.  Aft of the gearbox, the shaft exits the hull through a PYI dripless stuffing box.  The propellor is a PYI Maxprop, which folds during sailing to reduce drag and will drive the boat at hull speed, approximately 7 knots.

Electrical

Spiritus II has a sophisticated electrical system consisting of a 3,000 watt Xantrex inverter/charger, two 100 watt solar panels located on top of the bimini, a high-capacity Balmar alternator and two 200 Ah LiFePO4 lithium house batteries.  (The engine starter battery is a separate AGM.)  All of this is controlled by a Victron regulator and can be monitored using a smart phone.  Because lithium batteries can be discharged well below the 50% threshold that constrains wet cell, gel or AGM batteries, there is ample power to run the refrigerator and freezer compressors, electronics, and LED lights while at anchor.  The Xantrex inverter provides plenty of 110-volt power in two circuits to run kitchen appliances and to charge cell phones, computers and other equipment that doesn’t have 12-volt capability.  Standard plugs are conveniently located on both sides of the boat. The 30 A shore power hookup is located inside the aft starboard cockpit locker.

Sails and Rigging

The Hunter Legend uses B&R standing rigging with backstays to support a tall mast and mainsail.  She has all self-tailing winches and comes with an electric drill that can be used to operate the main sheet and halyard winch.  The mainsail furls with the help of a Dutchman system that uses the topping lift, (not needed to support the boom because it has a solid vang).   The 130 foresail is small and very convenient to tack and furls with a line aft to the cockpit.  There are two mainsail reefing lines that also run to the cockpit, along with the main sheet, main halyard, jib halyard, spinnaker halyard and topping lift.  Spiritus II has an asymmetrical spinnaker with a sock that gives her excellent light airs capability at all points of sail from close reach to running free.
