1990 Nonsuch 33

Introduction

About the 1990 Nonsuch 33

The Nonsuch 33 is the perfect boat for someone wanting zero sailing drama and a great cruising boat.

There will be no scrambling about the foredeck, very little “what’s this line for?” and no head-sheet angles to worry about. This is a great boat for shorthanded sailing. It might take a minute to wrap your head around controlling the sail shape with the “choker” but once you get the knack of it, you’ll soon discover the joy of simply sailing – the sounds of wind in the sail, waves on the hull, the feel of the sun on your face, the simple joy of it. Although you will be a bit challenged to keep up on a beat, when headed downwind, its very hard to get ahead of this boat.

The Nonsuch 33 is a cat boat, meaning that the mast is set all the way forward on the deck and is built in such a way as to require no standing rigging. The wishbone boom (like a windsurfer) is long, and the one-and-only sail moves within its confines. Tuning is accomplished with the use of a “choker,” which is a line that controls the fore and aft movement of the wishbone. Tensioning the choker pulls the wishbone aft, flattening the sale. Let the wishbone move forward and you get a larger pocket in the sail which is perfect for downwind sailing.

This vessel has a custom-designed hard-topped cockpit cover with a full enclosure. This gives you a whole extra room where you’ll find yourself gravitating, even in the winter months. Rain? Hah! Pass me a warm drink.

Furthermore, just for the truly lazy, she’s been outfitted with an electric winch and Strong Track©, meaning that sail’s going to go up with no friction push-back, and it’ll drop with ease. At the end of the sailing, tuck it into the sail bag, drop the hook, drop the dinghy off the davit, and go get some crabs, fish, or groceries.

Inside is home-away-from-home. The galley is everything it should be: deep sink, fridge/freezer, 3-burner stove with oven, ample food prep space. It’s compact enough to feel safe and big enough to be able to get things done.

The saloon is simply lovely. With white ultra-leather settees, it’s bright and clean. The port settee wraps around a table where you can easily seat four for dinner, and there is another shorter bench settee opposite.

At bedtime, the foreword stateroom has a Pullman berth with loads of storage in teak drawers and a hanging locker next to a dressing seat. The aft starboard quarter berth is huge with plenty of shoulder room for two.

The head has a composting toilet and a separate shower stall.

The general feel of the boat is spacious, bright, and welcoming. The teak and holly sole along with all the teak panelling ensures the rich warmth that only fine woodwork can impart. It is a straightforward, no-drama, easy-to-handle, easy-to-be-in, kind of boat. If you’d like to see it, just give us a call.

Layout & Description

The main stateroom is forward, consisting of a Pullman berth to port and a hanging locker and dressing seat to stbd. There is ample storage in drawers and lockers.

Aft of that, to stbd, is the head. There is a composting toilet and a separate shower stall.

The saloon has a C-shaped settee to port that seats up to 6, and there’s a bench settee to stbd. The upholstery is soft, white, ultra leather. There is teak everywhere, bulkheads, teak & holly sole, the table. It’s a very warm and inviting space.

Aft of the dinette is the galley to port. There are 1.5 deep centerline sinks, countertop storage, 3-burner gimballed stove/oven, top-loading fridge, and excellent food prep countertop space. There’s storage for dishes and such below and above the countertop. An overhead hatch helps to vent cooking and bring in fresh air. In addition to the hot/cold water electric taps, there is a foot pump for the sink that is plumed into separate drinking water jugs. There is an additional hand pump to drain the fridge.

Aft of the stbd settee is the forward-facing nav table, large enough to lay out a chart folded in half. Instruments and electrics surround the table. There is a bench back that can be removed to give access to the double-berth sized quarter berth.

The engine is located under the companionway steps.

The cockpit is fully enclosable, with a custom hard-top, teak grate, and cockpit cushions.
